Unfortunately, saving every single dog is not something that we are able to accomplish. Janine Guido, the founder of Speranza Animal Rescue, knows this all too well. She recently encountered a dog named Watson, who was in desperate need of help.
Watson, a pit bull, was discovered by a college student in a Philadelphia park. The poor dog was alone and in terrible condition. The student took Watson to an emergency veterinarian, as he was malnourished and had numerous wounds all over his body. The veterinarian sadly informed the student that Watson’s cancer was spreading and time was running out.
After receiving medical care, Watson made his way to the animal shelter. The staff at the shelter did everything they could to ensure that Watson was comfortable during his stay. Despite the efforts of everyone involved, Guido had a sinking feeling that the next day would not bring good news.
“I couldn’t bear the thought of abandoning him,” Guido shared with Dodo. “Especially when he needed me the most.”
In an effort to provide comfort, she comforted him by assembling a collection of cozy blankets and dog beds, embracing him with tender care throughout the night. She remained awake, dedicating her time to Watson, cradling him in her arms as he peacefully slept.
“He slept soundly throughout the night, nuzzling against me,” Guido disclosed. “I drifted off, only to wake up with tears streaming down my face.”
The following morning, Watson started moving in circles and ceased his intake of food and liquid. Guido could sense that his beloved pet was approaching the end of his life. Despite the hardship they faced, Guido never left Watson’s side. Eventually, Watson passed away, but the most remarkable aspect was that, during his final moments, he experienced the warmth of love for the very first time.
Guido expressed his gratitude for having the opportunity to be by his side on his final evening. Words of affection and appreciation poured out as he let him know the immense love he felt and the significance his presence held in his life. Although his heart currently feels shattered, Guido remains resolute in the decision to cherish every moment they shared, without any regrets.
